DIY Name Hangers

Having custom hangers is something that has gained popularity with many brides and their wedding parties over the past couple years. The only downside to this trend is the cost. A seller on Etsy lists her set of 8 hangers for $42! Even without using coupons at your local craft store you can make your very own set of custom hangers for about $20.

Supplies you will need:
  • Wooden hangers from Ikea
  • Letter stickers from your local craft store
  • Crystal embellishments (optional)
  • Mod Podge (optional)
  • Other decorative elements (ribbons, other stickers/rhinestones, etc.)
  • Hot Glue Gun

Step 1: Selecting Your Supplies

The first thing that you should do is purchase your hangers. It will be much easier to select your decorating elements if you can physically bring one of the hangers into the craft store with you to make sure you can fit all of your letters and decor on the thinner parts of the hanger. It would be a bummer to bring back all of your stickers if you brought them home only to find out that you can't fit them on the hangers!

Before purchasing a fist full of letters write all names and/or titles that you want on the hangers and count how many of each individual letter you need. You don't want to get home and realize that you are missing letters if you aren't comfortable cutting up other letters for your hangers (we had to create 2 lowercase L's and a capital J in one name, and we also did a few lowercase N's and a lowercase I).

Figure out what embellishments you would like on your hangers (if any) and purchase the items that will fit the letters and hangers best. These should be items that will either stick to the hanger REALLY well or items that will be flush to the surface so you can seal them on later.

Step 2: Write it Out

With all of your supplies in tow, place the hanger on a flat surface with the front (the part that curves in) facing you. Decide which name/title you would like to start with, and find the middle of the word. We used the word "Bride" for this hanger, so the middle of our word is the letter "i". Carefully remove the desired letter and place it along the center seam to center your word and find where your word will level out. (For some longer words you may need to curve them with the hanger or spell them out on the arm.)

Working your way out, position the additional letters next to the letters that are already in place. We used the order i, r, d, B, e for this hanger.

Step 3: Embellish

This is the fun part of the hangers! Now you can add any rhinestones, ribbons, stickers, and anything else you want to the hanger to give it the look you want or match it to your theme.

We used small rhinestones to accent the letters and give it a little extra shine. We gave it a quick coat of Mod Podge to keep the jewels in place and add some shine to the wood.

Optional: Non-Slip Grips

Using a hot glue gun, make a line of glue running down the hanger for 1.5"-2". You can make the line as wide as you want by making additional lines next to the original one. This is helpful for transporting dresses that would probably otherwise fall off of the hangers.

Let me know what kinds of crafts you would like to see in the future!
