Two Broke Brooms - Our Guide to The Wedding Feast

Food is... There's just no other way to put it: Food IS. It is one of the most important parts in every culture and in every country in the world, from the US to Qatar. All over the globe feasts are used to  celebrate, marking special occasions, life turning events in people's lives, and even sacred holidays.
One could very easily say that a wedding is all of these. Thus planning out the food for your wedding, from the rehearsal dinner to the reception, can be very daunting. One has thousands of years of wedding feasts to live up to, and anywhere from a dozen to one hundred relatives to please. For the foodies of us out there, though, it can also be very exciting. When our one goal in life is to feed people our cooking, well, put simply a wedding is a very special time with very special people, and one wants to have special food.

That inspired in us the idea of making our own food for the wedding. We decided to also make the wedding cakes, too. We did some research and found that it's traditional to have two cakes, the bride's cake (which is the tall, tiered cake) and the groom's cake (which is a long sheet cake).  As neither one of us are brides or grooms, we decided to have two “brooms” cakes, which will be somewhere in the middle in style.  Several days of menu planning and budgeting afterwards, logic slowly started to set in and realization dawned as we realized there was no way we would be able to cook all our own food, and make the cakes, and organize the families and friends coming into town, the dresses, the flowers, the decorations, the location...

No. Uh-uh.

Never the less, giving up on the idea of home cooked food, particularly for a couple that has as many food allergies and restrictions as we do, was a hard thing to do, particularly when you look at the budget, and realize that the hundreds and hundreds of dollars spent on the catering and the cake decorations could be spent on the honeymoon, or go towards the mortgage. We started to through around some ideas. Some were absurd, like for instance trying to becoming best friends with the owner of a catering company so we could get a discount, but probably not as absurd as trying to cook it all ourselves, or even the idea we decided on: Reception Potluck.

Yes, you read that right, no, your eyes are not deceiving you.
Reception Potluck! Think about it: every guest brings a dish that they like, which ensures that there will not only be more than enough food but also that everyone will have something there that they really like to eat that also fits in with their dietary restrictions. No disappointing the in-laws (at least not where taste buds are concerned). Yes, we might be crazy, but I think our pocketbooks are thanking us.

Now, along with food goes drink. To cut down on the price of alcohol (have you seen the price of a decent bottle of wine recently?), we decided to have a similar setup. People can bring all the different kinds of alcohol they like, and we will provide drinks for the toasts and for the Wedding Party. In addition, we will be providing a tea and instant hot chocolate bar. It's fun, it's inexpensive, and will please everyone! In the end, it will still be so much cheaper than any champagne would be, and mean so much more us.

ModCloth - Romantic Road Trip Style

*This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking my links. This does not cost you anything*

ModCloth's latest collection is a massive range of floral, lace, wood, and other patterns reminiscent of a summer festival or the 70's. They have a ton of items that would be perfect for a Boho, camping, or festival inspired wedding, or a casual outdoor affair. There are a few items below that I think are stunning. (I just might be adding the Yes You Glam necklace to my cart!)

Mix and Matrimony
Right Here and Vow

Rinsed by the Rain
Pace of My Mind

No Place Like Roam
Yes You Glam

Garden Party Princess

So how pretty are those?!? And you could definitely wear/use those garments and accessories more than once. And besides the clothing, ModCloth also has some pretty fabulous home goods that would be AMAZING additions to a reception. Here are some of my favorites:

Tiny Twinklings
Peaceful and Quiet

Me and Unite

Wouldn't the Me and Unite curtain be a perfect backdrop for a sweetheart table? Then you can bring it home and use it every day! What were your favorite items? Is there anything else that you're eyeballing for your upcoming wedding (or just for fun)? Let us know in the comments!
